How Social Media literally Changed The Music listening Experience Overnight— by Derek Linzy

Imagine this....

Your favorite Recording Artist has just announced they are releasing a new single for their upcoming album. You were made aware of this announcement by having to tune it to MTV's "TRL- Total Request Live" show at an exclusive one-time airing on a cable network. You have no cell phone to update you on anything they are planning to say or play. This information you are getting ready to receive is only available at this segmented time. During this airing they have mentioned this song will be available only in stores at a specific date which is 1-month away. The episode concludes no further information is made available. In this two week span you have no way of getting access to this new album. You tune it to the station to watch the video of the one song whenever it plays as part of a countdown which contains atleast another 40 songs by other artists.

Finally, the day comes for the official release. You arrive early to the store only to stand in line for hours with other crazed fans waiting for the doors to open. Once the doors open you make your way to the CD aisle—You find the song in its new unwrapped CD housing case—You take the CD to the counter and pay for it. You get into your car, open it up and pop it into your CD player. You remove the liner notes from the case and read the titles, credits and pictures from the album. You are listening to each song one by one. You find some of the tracks are outstanding and some of the others "so-so" for the moment. They may require a deeper listen later.

Finally, you reach the song that has led you to this destination and it does nothing to dissapoint by all means. Next, you call your friends and family to discuss the album and make plans to have a listening party. Everyone meets up later and you are having the time of your life listening, sharing and reciting the new release. Its wonderful and was well worth it!

Fast-forward to 2026....

Artist gets on Instagram—Announces new album link is in the bio. Done!
