Adorno and Profit

When Adorno talks about mass culture and Industry culture he talks about how the industry culture makes media standardized and they make sure it appeals to a very broad audience and so people will all have similar experiences. these experiences will differ some, but they will share the same qualities. He also talks about how they do this for profit. In my mind they do this so that people who have seen something similar to a piece of media they haven't seen may be more inclined to see that media.

Take Star Trek and Star Wars for the first example. These two franchise are different, different story, different characters, different names for everything. However, while different they share some of the same qualities. Both are set in space, both feature action, and both have big time actors in them. So, according to Adorno, those who have seen either Star Wars or Star Trek would be more inclined to see the other because they have shared qualities, and the people can have conversations because of the shared qualities as well.

Adorno argues that this is negative. It can be seen as negative, in the fact that it can be looked upon as the mass media and culture industry controlling the public. They make these pieces of media that are so similar that people will want to see more media because they are similar and if they enjoyed a piece of media, they would enjoy a similar piece of media. This leads to a bigger profit for the culture industry as more and more people will pay to see more and more media.

Another example is that of sports media, specifically sports movies and shows. Sports is a very broad category and so a lot of things can be put into this category. For example if you are a fan of football, a movie you probably have seen is Remember the Titans. Remember the Titans is one of the most well known football movies out there, and if you enjoyed that movie you would most likely enjoy another football movie, such as The Longest Yard. Adorno's theory could also show that if you enjoyed a football movie, you would also want to see another sport movie, such as the baseball movie Moneyball. These shared qualities and genres can attribute to people wanting to consume more and more media. So the question I want to pose is, have you been affected by Adorno's theory of profit?
