John Storey explains that this constant information of entertainment keeps the masses satisfied and placated. Doing so influences the masses to not complain or revolt against what is important to the elites. When reflecting on apps like TikTok, it can be easy to see how this can strongly influence anyone who watches or consumes social media regularly.
American football may be a good example of a current one-to-one example compared to the roman colosseum. TikTok and other apps have become a place for more enjoyment, entertainment, action, and excitement. But this enjoyment doesn't just last one game or even a season. These apps' power of satisfaction can be experienced at any time of day. Apps like TikTok will also customize their videos and information to give the consumers and the masses the most enjoyable and liked videos. In doing so, having their own personal entertainment machine that scratches any entertainment, action, or exciting itch they may have.
Twitter released information indicating that the government restricted specific topics and themes a few years ago. This was the case regarding the management and influence of certain opinions and subjections surrounding the 2020 election. This information was shared with the public after Elon Musk bought Twitter in October 2022.
I remember when I first started watching short-form content five years ago. Spending thirty minutes to an hour felt crazy and unnatural. But as the apps have improved, so has the time I spend watching videos on them.
*Was Storey correct in explaining the impact that entertainment can have on the masses?
*Or do individuals have more control over what they consume online?
I like your example of how TikTok is like the Roman Coliseum. It does make sense because the Coliseum was used fir all sorts of entertainment, not necessarily gladiator fights. TikTok is the same way, while it does provide entertainment, there is just so much diversity of the entertainment you can watch. Storey I believe was correct in his explaining, the reason being that people can control what they consume online, however, people have become so accustomed to what they like to enjoy, it is hard for them to stray away from that.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I love your comparison using TikTok! Are people getting complacent and are we (meaning app creators) satisfying masses of people. I love your question that you ask at the end is entertainment impacting the masses or do we as individuals have control what we consume. I think there’s a bit of both that individuals can have control of what they’re consuming, but I also think that certain apps and social media do you play a role of Satisfying the masses. It’s quite a interesting topic and very thought provoking!
