Popular culture is like a big mix of ideas, activities, beliefs, and things that many people in a society agree on and enjoy at a certain time. It helps shape who we are and how we see ourselves and our place in the world. Popular culture shows what people think is normal, but it can also change those ideas. It’s like a mirror that reflects who we are while helping us express our identities. Influence is a big part of this, meaning how things in popular culture can change what people believe and how they act.
Today, it’s really important to understand how popular culture influences people, especially since cultures from all over the world are mixing together. This makes it harder to tell where different cultural ideas come from, so we need to look closely at how these cultural things affect society. When we study different ideas about cultural influence, we find theories that explain how what we watch and listen to can change how we think and behave.
For example, some theories show how people might stay quiet about their opinions if they think they are different from the popular view. Other theories explain how movies and music can inspire social changes and new ways of thinking.
Symbols in culture, like fashion trends or famous images, also help show what groups people value. In short, looking at popular culture and how it influences us is really important because it affects how we interact and communicate with each other. By studying how cultures influence their members and how this has changed over time, we can better understand how society works today.
If you could pick any culture to learn about their widespread global influence what culture would you choose to study?
You talked a lot about how cultures from all over the world have been mixed together in recent decades, and it's because of this mixture that I'm trying to study Korean pop culture more.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's because I've been watching Squid Game recently (I mean, both my post and response have referenced it), but out of all foreign film collections, the movies that come out of South Korea tend to be the ones that are most influenced by American cinema. Many of the camera techniques, story elements, and use of visual effects are all ripped almost directly from what's been taught in American film schools for nearly a century.
I've always wondered why that is, and if I ever had the opportunity to write a book about the influence of film in cultures around the world, that would be the country I would attack first. They don't have a long history of filmmaking, but it's quickly becoming some of the best and most recognizable around the world.
