Impact of Memes in Shaping Popular Culture

 What's your favorite meme?

For me, these two come to mind instantly:

and

Over the past several years, I've used these memes so much they've become a constant in my vocabulary or communication style. They almost feel like an extension of me.

Specifically..
Memes have eased the burden of complexity through simple imagery and messaging.
Memes have rescued me during times where I've been speechless.
Memes have been responsible for the development of better relationships or connections during the Covid years and beyond.
Memes have allowed me to stay connected to people while I've been away.
Memes have bridged fractured relationships through humor and lightheartedness.
Memes are magical and joyful!
Memes are less is more.
Memes have provided experiences of pure joy and laughter shared among friends and family.
Memes have shifted popular culture through the addition of bite-sized visual snacks that shape and reflect the shifting cultural values of our times.

  1. Memes are great because of how we use them and because they have become their language. They have become an extension of us and play a significant role in conversations and vocabulary. My friends and I use memes to respond to each other, and sometimes, we have an entire conversation using only memes because we all know the meaning or what they mean to the person sending them. I think it is incredible what we do with such a simple and light-hearted form of media. One thing I have noticed lately is my use of memes for different friend groups, and it almost creates a sub-pop culture group for the various forms of memes on social media.

  2. I love this example as well, because if you understand a meme reference its feels like a language only a meme-er would know. My favorite meme to use in my everyday life is the little girl in front of the house on fire. The impact of meme definitely come from social media and online video platforms. There are currently websites where you could find more information about the meme like its a thesaurus.

  3. I absolutely love this. I often use memes when having text conversations with my 20-year-old daughter. When her tone or content seems to get a bit heavy, throwing in a simple pop culture reference always seems to lighten up our conversation. If she is having a rough day, I’ll send the meme of Will Ferrell when he starred in Elf with the words “I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!!!!”
