Pop culture has been around for a long time, from reading the bible in medieval England, to watching Charlie Chaplin in the 1920’s, to today’s media which involves not just movies and books, but social media. For as long as media and pop culture have been around, it has been the centerpiece of conversation. When we have conversations with friends, family, strangers, or whomever, pop culture is usually something that comes up in these conversations because it is easy to talk about because everyone knows everything about pop culture, right? That is the question I pose, does being ignorant of pop culture make conversation difficult?
There are obviously pieces of media that are not big pieces of pop culture, that people love. However, when conversations come up and these pieces of media that are big in pop culture, if you don’t know these pieces of media does it make that conversation difficult? Klosterman states that there are three levels of information.
1. Information that you know you know
2. Information that you know you don’t know
3. Information that you don’t know you don’t know
For instance, I know a lot about the show The Office, I have watched it through multiple times and so I know the pop culture references. I don’t know anything really about popular musicals such as Wicked, and so when those references come around, I don’t understand them or get them at all. Does this make conversation harder? For me yes it can be hard when someone is talking about a pop culture reference that I know nothing about. I will try to pretend that I know what they are talking about, but I won’t. It can also be hard the other way when I am making these pop culture references and I know the person I am talking too doesn’t get them, I have to scale back those references.
